Tony Hawk’s RIDE Skateboard Peripheral
Well, here it is… I had promised to display the new Tony Hawk control peripheral, and I’ll be damned if you’re going to call me a liar.
Tony Hawk seems to think this is the coolest thing to happen to video games since the orange Duck Hunt gun. “The board controller is a marvel of new technology.” That’s what he said. A marvel. “[It] responds like a real skateboard, you can even go for grabs and the sensors will detect it”. That’s all from his Twitter. In Mr. Hawk’s mind, this thing is going to provide a full-out skateboarding experience. Not only can you go for grabs and have the device detect them, but you can crush your face through your coffee table and drown in your own blood! That or crush your own hand between this thing and your hardwood floor. Sounds good. There are buttons on the gizmo and it responds to tilt, like the Wii Balance Board does for Skate It.
Of course, this isn’t to say the RIDE board won’t be awesome. Maybe it really will shock us all and respond way beyond expectations. But, in order to do so, the thing will have to have a significant cost. Anything over $100, and I doubt anybody is going to care if it cooks you breakfast in the morning. Leave it to Activision to try and make us buy more plastic game tools.
The peripheral and development team mark a reboot for the Tony Hawk series, since the last few were full of suckage. Robomodo will be developing the new title, as former series developer Neversoft has been focusing entirely on Guitar Hero games.
