Eidos-Montreal: Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3

Yesterday, news came out that Eidos-Montreal is not only working on Thief 4, but Deus Ex 3. Personally, I took this as some of the most important news in a month.

I recall the first time I ever played Thief. It was a day laden with expletives, as the difficulty level of that title was of the unfair variety. Fun, most certainly; but difficult, most certainly certainly. I wandered through those dark, pixely corridors as Garrett, aching for my next opportunity to konk someone in the skull and take their tuppence. Plenty of years later, we’re here waiting for the fourth installment. Eidos-Montreal merely announced the title, stating it is in its very early stages – so early they are still hiring people to come on board for the project. They have a bunch of ideas, lots of new concepts, and are determined to put together a great effort and release an ambitious project.

That’s all well and good. They have a lot to live up to with that series, and even moreso combined with their other project…

I remember the first time I played Deus Ex, too. I also remember the second, third, and eighteenth times. To this day, I still find new things and explore areas differently each time. I also remember my dad asking me what I was playing, to which he was convinced I answered “day of sex.”

The reason the news that Eidos-Montreal is working on Deus Ex 3 struck me as super important news is simply because it let me know the game hasn’t been forgotten about. It was almost exactly two years ago that Deus Ex 3 was first announced, and since then we’ve received next to no information on the project aside from a few tell-nothing teaser videos, the original directors won’t be involved, and that it will be a prequel to the first Deus Ex. Being that Deus Ex is without a doubt one of my favorite games of all time, and being that it had a mediocre at best sophomore installment, wondrous things are expected and required for the third. Real information is supposed to be showcased at E3, so that’s worth looking forward to. If you have never played the first game, I’m admittedly sort of ashamed for you, and I suggest you spend $10 and remedy the situation with rug-burning haste.

Good luck, Eidos. You’ve got a hell of a lot to accomplish.
