Will the PS3 Ever Dominate the Market?

Kotaku reported today that Sony Exec David Reeves, the upcoming retiree, believes that within the next 3-5 years, the PS3 will lead the video game market in sales.

He says this with what feels like a little bit of pride. Pride that the console may be eight years old before it leads the market. Pride that a console which has superior hardware, the greatest possibilities, and the strongest console history may be top seller around the time it needs replaced.

What?

It pains me how unimpressive the console has been given the Playstation’s superior history. The PS3 could clearly have been the front-runner the whole time, but it’s been plagued by bad decisions, barely any exclusive titles worth owning the console for, and poor marketing. If it becomes the king in 3-5 more years, it’ll only be because everyone else on the planet already has their 360 or Wii, and they’ll buy the PS3 out of lack of options. That or they want a Blu-Ray player, and well, you might as well get it in the form of a PS3 for the same price as a straight-up player. The next-gen will already be upon us… won’t it?

Reeves said “”The legacy will be that people will see a tortoise and hare situation. In a way, in the end it will be a dead heat. People will say PS3 took a while to get going but it really caught up very quickly and confounded many of the critics from the first year.”

The console is arguably getting better as the years go by – but that’s just it – the years are going by… as Sony still puts effort into releasing PS2 titles.

Does this claim make sense to you? Do you think it’s true?

  1. I think it is possible, but if and only if Sony is able to secure a good amount of exclusive games. Hopefully, as a PS3 owner, this will happen.

  2. As much as i love my ps3, I dont think that is possible.

I doubt it’s possible, I think Both consoles will be Neck and neck this whole gen. But does it really matter as long as they both are pumping out great games.

I would much rather see the Xbox 360 and the PS3 run neck and neck. The high competition is a good thing for the consumer.

As to whether I think it’s possible or not? That depends. Sony has definitely moved in the right direction in the 2 years that I’ve had my PS3. If they can keep moving in that direction, I can see them at least matching the user base of the 360.

Isn’t it enough that the system has a lot of amazing games coming out between this year and next year? Sony never expected competition this generation. Now they have competition, they have to move their asses and start caring about it.

What matters to me are the games. I’m not going to worry about whether the PS3 is in first place or second place.

it could be posible, sony just gotta cut the price of the console a little bit more and improve marketing.

p.s they gotta develop better programming tools for that thing as well, it’s got a lot of potential.
