Katamari Forever

The surreal and explicitly wackadoo Katamari series isn’t over, after all. Later on this year, sometime in Q4, Playstation owners will roll around with glee when they are treated to an exclusive title: Katamari Forever.

First off, this title will be created in stunning 1080p, and will offer various video filters you can play with to change your experience. See the video at the bottom of this post for more explanation on that. Basically, you can switch between regular animation, cel-shading, comic book style and even a wood tone. These look fantastic.

Katamari Forever won’t be the same “roll up as much crap as you can in the time limit” play style we’ve seen before. Though that’s hideously fun for some odd reason, this title will take it a few steps further and provide you with objectives more noble than being a gargantuan heap of trash. Would you like a “for instance?” Sure you would…

One level starts off in black and white, forcing you to roll things up and restore color to the world. One is to restore life to the level, in the form of flowers, plants, and other dandy foliage. You do so by going into the ocean, soaking up some water, and spreading it across the landscape to encourage growth. Changing things – that’s what it’s all about.

Fall 2009 is the release date. We’re aware that is, in fact, not a date. Unfortunately it’s the most specific thing available. You’ll have to wait many more months to roll with this title. Terrible pun.

Joystiq has this video trailer of the game available for your viewing pleasure. Please enjoy its intense Japanese-ness.

I’m psyched about this game. I’ve played every one of them so far and I’ve enjoyed every single one of them.

That being said, I’m also glad they’re updating the gameplay. I hope they do keep some levels with the classic gameplay though.

This one is a must-buy for me.

  2. Not sure that slight gameplay enhancements and a new lick of paint will excite me about another Katamari game tbh, as lovely as this looks and sounds I think I am starting to tire of the series.. :(
