Guitar Hero: Smash Hits Tracks (Updated)
Admit it, you’re a sucker for plastic instruments. You got all giddy the other day when we told you about LEGO Rock Band, because it takes your plastic music obsession to an all new level. Today we have even more video game music news, just for you, the able-bodied living room musician that rocks it five colored buttons at a time from Jimmy Astros to the Hancock Theater.
This summer’s Guitar Hero release will be a ‘greatest hits’ collection, named ‘Smash Hits,’ because that title just has a higher level of hardcore plastic-reaming intensity. The pack will feature all of the most super duper songs found on previous Guitar Hero titles. Since the obsession with music games didn’t burn into a full conflagration until GH3: Legends of Rock, at least a couple people likely never went back and picked up the first two installments. This will give them a chance to play some of the raddest selections from said games. It’ll also help people like me, who have not played them because they only have newer Rock Band instruments, to which GH1 and GH2 give a hefty middle finger of non-support.
Activision has been slow to report which tracks have made the cut, but an official list reflecting both GH1 and GH2 has been compiled and presented for consumer eyes. Below the screenshot are the inclusions revealed thus far:
Avenged Sevenfold – “Beast And The Harlot”
Rage Against The Machine – “Killing In The Name”
Rush – “YYZ”
Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird”
Foo Fighters – “Monkey Wrench”
Iron Maiden – “The Trooper”
Nirvana – “Heart-Shaped Box”
Lamb of God – “Laid To Rest”
The Police – “Message In A Bottle”
Wolfmother – “Woman”
Kansas – “Carry On Wayward Son”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Trippin’ On A Hole In A Paper Heart”
Warrant – “Cherry Pie”
Alice in Chains – “Them Bones”
Danzig – “Mother”
Jane’s Addiction – “Stop!”
Reverend Horton Heat – “Psychobilly Freakout”
The Sword – “Freya”
Mötley Crüe- “Shout At The Devil”
More will come, and so far we have a pretty solid looking set list. Please note the distinct lack of anything involving Bret Michaels, which is a Neil Armstrong moon shoe of a step in the right direction. Looking forward to it.
Update: Guitar Hero III Tracks Announced (4/30/09)
Pat Benatar – “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”
Living Colour – “Cult Of Personality”
Heart – “Barracuda”
Kiss – “Rock And Roll All Nite”
AFI – “Miss Murder”
DragonForce – “Through The Fire And Flames”
Priestess – “Lay Down”
Slayer – “Raining Blood”

I have to say, I’m intrigued but reserved as well. I own GH1 and GH2 on the PS2. While it is nice that you’ll be able to play the other instruments now, the price has to be right for me to pick this up.
I also must say that YYZ is a ton of fun to play on guitar.
Valid point, my friend. For those who already own every GH game, it’s just paying for the same stuff over again in a new context. Hopefully they won’t try and release it for $60 – they’ve already made their money on these tracks. $40 at best.
I think they should provide an option to download a large track pack for $20 or $30 for people like me who already have everything else they need.
But this is Activision we’re talking about. We are kidding ourselves if they think that’ll ever happen.
