Red Faction: Guerrilla Demo Available

The release of Red Faction: Guerrilla is still far off, set at June 2nd. Despite that, THQ released a free playable demo for all of us with access to XBL and PSN. While the demo is wildly short, it gives you a great taste of what to expect from the game – and in my opinion, it’s tasty like a big, sloppy slab of BBQ ribs.

I’ve been wondering whether or not this title would be any good. This is the third game in the series, and while the first entries weren’t the worst things in the world, they weren’t the best. But I must say, after playing this new demo on XBL, I’m quite looking forward to getting my hands on the official release. It took somewhere between 5-10 minutes to play through. I lost track a bit, as the gameplay was non-stop action. In that short amount of time, the player is responsible for running across the map with a giant sledgehammer, smashing everything in their path, getting to a garage with a giant mech, controlling the mech back across the map, parking it on a truck, then using a mounted RPG-ish gun on the back of the truck to destroy tons of enemy vehicles coming to reclaim their stolen mech. My my, butterfly.

When I say ’smashing everything in their path,’ I mean it. All you’ve got is the sledgehammer, and there’s a guy shooting at you? You’re near the wall of a building with nowhere else to go? Well, take that hammer and crush that wall – bam, you’re inside. Driving the mech meant you could stomp on or plow through every single pixel of obstacle that got in your way. It reeks of badassery, and hopefully the rest of the game plays with as much joy as the demo. If so, we’re in for something good.

The controls were tight, the graphics looked swell, and I enjoyed the button usage and control structure for weapons, movement, etc. It all felt pretty solid, and you can tell THQ is feeling pretty good about the product putting out a demo a full 6 weeks before release. Definite potential.

Go download, give it a play, and post a comment telling me what you think. I won’t chop off your fingers if you disagree with me – but I doubt you will.
