Risen’s “Mood” Trailer – Calm and Lush

by Jeff Saporito on April 20th, 2009PC, Xbox

My goodness, RPG fans. It’s your lucky day! No, you haven’t won a lifetime supply of Triscuit crackers, it’s better! Nearly a year ago, we heard talk of a fancy looking RPG game called Risen, being developed by Piranha Bytes, creators of the Gothic series. What has been released now is a video known as the “mood trailer,” complete with some in-game footage and very pretty, sleepy music. One can assume that it was created to set the overall feel of the game. It showcases the lush, beautiful world of Risen, set on a volcanic tropical island full of big fancy birds and terrifying porcupine things.

The video doesn’t actually show anything about the game, but perhaps that is what makes it so interesting. Little is truly known about what all this game will involve, and that mystery is keeping people’s interest piqued. It’s being crafted for the 360 and PC. A demo is to be out soon, which we’re waiting for eagerly. Like a hen incubating an egg, hoping it hatches into Kevin Covais.

The characters look fantastic, both in the stills released to-date and the ones depicted in this video. The world is obviously going to be epic, and this title might just end up being more clever than a sack of slippers.

A game that has this much care put into its environment is always a special adventure. Play takes on a transformative power that really absorbs you into the experience and wraps you up in the game. This title looks like it would be fun if your only task was to walk around the woods. Maybe you could collect a snail or something. Or plant a bush. Regardless, one can look forward to this title if only to become familiar with what has to be a special place.

That was sappy. Watch the video.
