Square’s next DS remake isn’t what you think

Hot on the heels of november’s Chrono Trigger DS redux, the Square-Enix remake machine is running strong following the announcement of a new, entirely 3D rendition of the relatively unknown SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu, or Final Fantasy Legend II.

The company spilled the beans earlier this week in an issue of Shonen Jump , with a vague release of “sometime in 2009″ in Japan. The remake, which appears to have stylized cel-shaded graphics, looks more like a recent Dragon Quest game (or maybe even a DS sequel to Square’s Samurai Legend Musashi for the PS2) than something out of the less artistically wacky SaGa series, and given its relative niche status, no U.S. release has been announced for the game.

Final Fantasy Legends II was originally released in the U.S. for the original Game Boy in 1991, after the original Final Fantasy Legend, the first title in the SaGa series, debuted the previous year. Due to major differences between the two series, the U.S. releases fell under the Final Fantasy brand for its recognition in the west.

Currently, no information as to why Square chose to remake Final Fantasy Legend II has been released.
