360 Officially Outsells Original Xbox Worldwide

Just a few days ago the third birthday of the Xbox 360, Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox 360 has now sold more units worldwide than the original did in it’s entire lifespan. Microsoft had mentioned that they had not planned on passing this mark for another few weeks due to the holiday buying rush, which could add some more padding to that lead by the beginning of the new year.
Exact numbers weren’t disclosed, but it’s easy to guess the ballpark number considering that the original Xbox sold 25 million units in its four year life span. With the recent price drops on the Arcade SKU ($199) and the excitement of the New Xbox Experience, it’s no surprise that the 360 has recently been at the top of the sales charts.

That means that the 360 accomplished the same amount in 3 years that the original Xbox did in 4 years. Honestly that isn’t as much of an improvement as I was expecting. Although it appears that the 360 will do quite well in the next couple of years.
I think a better comparison will come in a year. I think it’s always better to compare on an equal time scale.
Why would you want to do such a thing? Compare Apples to Apples?! (Yes I’m aware we’re comparing 360’s to original XBoxes) but come on – that’s not how the statistics page of any article reads!
Hmmm took a while for it to…. maybe the novelty of the original Xbox made it such a big hit in the past, but the 360 has proven some decent ground and I expected it to sell faster considering its gaming power, but that’s that.
Brad, that’s what I was thinking.
The 360 has a perceived momentum that is far greater than reality. Perhaps things aren’t as rosy as Microsoft has us to believe?
Yea I agree. I havent yet to buy a console, but Im thinking I might go with a PS3. Im thinking the 360 is already being pushed somewhat to its upper ends while the PS3 is still being explored for its fullest potentials, but hecks, talks of a PS4 and Xbox 720 are buzzing…but who knows.
Brad,
Sony has mentioned many times that the PS3 will have a 10year life span. That doesn’t mean that the PS4 won’t be out until 10 years after the PS3 came out but I do not expect them to launch the PS4 until close to the end of that 10 year span. Considering the PS3 is just over 2 years old now, I’m guessing we have quite a few years of PS3 life left before the PS4 is out.
Plus Microsoft has said that the 360’s life span will be at least one day longer than the PS3’s.
So I would say you’re safe to look into a current system now and even a year or two from now. You’ll still get lots of time with the system before the next generation is released.
Alright, sounds good…. but Im still left wondering which one to get L
maybe i should buy both and just end the confusion
I personally own both consoles, and although I’ve had my flings with the PS3, I always seem to end up coming back to the 360.
It may be just because I’m more comfortable with the feel of that specific consoles controller in my hands or some other strange reason, but I find myself enjoying myself longer and keeping myself entertained for longer when playing my 360.
The only thing my PS3 is used for these days is for Home, a bit of Pixeljunk Eden to pass the time, and the occasional SOCOM 3 session. All my other hours are spent in Left 4 Dead, Rock Band 2, and Gears of War.
Each console has it’s own ups and downs, so I can’t really say which is better. Everyone used to say get the PS3 for it’s RPG collection, but I haven’t been thrilled with anything NEW that’s come out. And the backwards compatibility is nice, however it seems that they are phasing it out with each new SKU.
If your a movie buff with a nice HD TV, I’d say get a PS3 just for the Blu-ray drive. Other than that, it’s pretty much a wash since all the AAA titles are being releases on multiple consoles anyway.
I WANT TO BUY A CONSOLE BETWEEN XBOX 360 AND PS3 HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
